Which Breast Implant Placement Provides the Most Natural Appearance?

There are many factors that contribute to the final appearance of breast augmentation surgery. During the consultation process, most women expect to be making decisions about the size, shape, and type of breast implants to create their desired look; however, choosing the right breast implant placement technique can also have a significant effect on the end result.

There are two main placement options: below the natural breast tissue (subglandular) and behind the breast tissue and the chest muscle (submuscular). Though subglandular placement can produce natural looking results, patients must have sufficient soft tissue density and skin elasticity to adequately conceal the implant. Not all women are good candidates for this breast surgery technique, as implants are more prone to rippling when placed over the chest muscle without ample soft tissue coverage.

Our plastic surgeons at Regional Plastic Surgery Center typically recommend breast implant placement below the chest muscle for the most natural-looking, long-lasting results. This position can allow for proper implant coverage, while simultaneously reducing the risk for complications such as rippling or capsular contracture. As an additional advantage, submuscular placement can also improve the accuracy of mammograms.

With our Vectra 3D Imaging System, you will be given the opportunity to see simulated, three-dimensional results before your breast surgery. The images will help your surgeon and you to visualize and choose the size and shape of implants for your desired look.

To help ensure you are satisfied with the results of your breast augmentation, be sure to carefully explain your expectations with your board-certified plastic surgeon during the consultation process. For more information, please contact Regional Plastic Surgery Center today.
